NCS: Technical oil discovery at Kark

Aker BP finds oil south of the Gyda field, in a five meters oil-bearing layer In the Eldfisk Formation. The discovery is considered non-commercial.

The primary target for 2/1-17 S well (Kark prospect) was to prove petroleum in Upper Jurassic Ula Formation. The secondary target was to prove petroleum in deeper reservoir rocks in the Jurassic and Triassic, Eldfisk, Bryne and Skagerrak Formations.

The primary exploration target was not present in the well.

In the Eldfisk Formation, a layer of about five metres of oil-bearing sandstones with good reservoir quality was encountered. The Bryne and Skagerrak Formations were not drilled.

Preliminary estimates place the size of the discovery between 3 and 9.5 million barrels oil equivalent.
