UKCS: The Liberator well just missed the reservoir

Preliminary petrophysical interpretation indicates that the targeted Lower Cretaceous upper Captain sand is pinched out at the Liberator well location and that the lower Captain sand is present and below the estimated OWC.

In an announcement from i3 Energy, the company offers preliminary results for the Liberator Well 13/23c-9, reaching TD in the Valhall formation.

The objective of this pilot well is to enable a future development well to be positioned at an optimal location in the Lower Cretaceous upper Captain sands channel in the south-eastern area of the Liberator field.

Early petrophysical information obtained from MWD tools indicates that the targeted upper Captain sand has not been penetrated and is pinched out at the 13/23c-9 location. The lower Captain sand is present in the well and is below the estimated oil-water contact as expected.

On initial tie to the seismic data, the well appears to be located proximal to the main upper Captain channel fairway and further well data is required in order to interpret and locate the key reservoir upper Captain channel edge.

As such, preparations are being made to obtain a vertical seismic profile (VSP) in the well and to also run a shear wave sonic log, after which 13/23c-9 will be plugged and abandoned as planned.

These data will be used to recalibrate and update the existing seismic model such that options and plans for further operations at this location to meet the objective of locating a future development well in the south-east area of the field can be made.

Liberator Field

Liberator was discovered by Dana Petroleum in November 2013 with well 13/23d-8.

Liberator was found to have 7 m of net pay at the top of a 96 m thick high-quality Lower Cretaceous Captain Sands reservoir with super-high permeability greater than 2 Darcy’s.

According to i3 Energy mid-case discovered, contingent and prospective resources at Liberator are of 314 MMbbls STOIIP, recoverable of 146 MMbbls.

The 13/23c-9 well is part of Liberator Phase II (East) appraisal and development, where the well intended to de-risk 42 MMbbls contingent resources and 90 MMbbls prospective resources.
