Water injection – the solution to recover more oil from Gudrun

Equinor and partners have agreed upon a NOK 2.4bn investment in the further development of the Gudrun field, enhancing oil recovery and extending the field’s life to 2032.

In view of Gudrun’s production decline, Equinor (operator, 36%) and partners Neptune (25%), OMV (24%) and Repsol (15%) decided to invest into a water injection plant that will produce water from the Utsira Fm and reinject it into the reservoir for pressure support and increased production.

The measures implemented to extend the field life are referred to as Gudrun phase 2, planned to start during 2021.

Gudrun is a HPHT field that holds about 184 MMboe. The field requires special technology and Equinor is actively using the experience gained from the Kvitebjørn and Kristin developments.

The Gudrun PDO was approved by Norwegian authorities in 2010 and the field came on stream in 2014. Seven wells are currently in production on the field.

A NOK 500 million contract for detail engineering, fabrication, installation and start-up of the water injection plant has been awarded to the service company Aibel.
