NGU and UiT start seabed methane leaks investigation offshore Lofoten

The results will offer a better view over what time the methane was released from the seabed to the atmosphere and if more emissions have occurred while the climate changed in the past.

The investigation of seabed methane leaks offshore west Lofoten is part of the “NORCRUST – Norwegian margin fluid systems and methane derived carbonate crusts” collaborative project, led by the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) and funded by the Research Council of Norway’s (NFR) PETROMAKS 2 program.

NORCRUST aims to study natural methane seepage sites at the seabed of the Norwegian-Barents seas, mainly focusing on understanding the dynamics and history of these fluid flow systems and its control factors.

The Center for Excellence “CAGE – Arctic Gas Hydrate, Environment and Climate ” at the Arctic University of Norway is the project partner.

The NGU scientists involved in the project identified an area in the ocean west of Lofoten, that will be investigated this summer. Researchers at NGU and UiT – the Arctic University of Norway will conduct a detailed video inspection of the seabed around the leakage and take samples of carbonate crusts by using a remote-controlled underwater vehicle.
